‘Cooking Up Murder: Uncovering the Story of César Román’ True Crime Docuseries Review

Cooking Up Murder: Uncovering the Story of César Román is a three-part true crime documentary series that streamed on Netflix. It is directed by Román Parrado.

César Román is a European chef who declares himself “The King of Cachopo” while cooking in Spain. One day, his girlfriend Heidi Paz seemingly vanishes, but when her body is found, the police arrest César. During his trial, more and more information comes out. As his story continues to unravel, a portrait of a narcissist who has told multiple lies to expand his career, eventually leading to a murder.

Heidi Paz was a beautiful young woman who encountered a monster, one who chopped her up after he killed her. This is one of the issues I had with the documentary. It starts to focus more on César’s lies, as fantastical as they are, instead of on Heidi and her family.

To be clear, César is a lying scumbag who makes up lies to validate himself and feed his narcissism. Through his own words, you see what a loser this guy truly is and it is gut-wrenching to hear how he scammed so many people.

What is sad, despite being a proven murderer, he only received fifteen years in prison. This is European justice. Do not tell an off-color joke or share an offensive meme, your family will be put through torture by the system. You murder someone and you get out after a little over a decade. It is a shame because César deserved so much more as did his victim Heidi Paz.
